The Dressage SA Solidarity Stars Project (RSA)

Dressage South Africa (DSA) published a call for talented but disadvantaged riders, who would not otherwise have the opportunity to compete on an equal footing to regular competitors at National Championships or other competitions.

Riders with talent and access to a horse that they would be able to compete on were then selected. Through the FEI Solidarity fund, they were provided with regular coaching. The coaches, all of a high standard, were familiar with the riders and had previously coached them. In addition, the selected riders were provided with free affiliation to DSA and South Africa Equestrian Federation (SAEF), and entrance to competitions for practice with a view to entering the National Dressage Provincial Team Championships (2 teams) under the name of Solidarity Stars.

The results were remarkable, including a team finish on the podium (3rd and 7th out of 7 provincial teams). The riders excelled with Shepherd Zira being Reserve National Novice Champion with a score of 70.1%, and Eddie Newman winning the Consolation Class. There were 47 entries.

This project would not have been possible without the support of FEI Solidarity. It just goes to prove what is possible with sufficient funding, generous horse owners and enthusiastic talented riders!
